Charles Hampton was born in 1923 in Tacoma, Wash. He enlisted in the Army at Tacoma, Wash. in 1943 and at the time of his enlistment had completed one year of college and was unmarried. He joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. and was assigned to Company H of the 86th Infantry Regiment, later with the 10th Mountain Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, the 226th Engineering Company and Company D of the 126th Mountain Engineering Battalion.
